Casa dei Bambini Newsletter, February, #6
Teacher: Rhoda Snyder
Dear Parents,

while the month of February is a short month, it is packed with many activities. Our children are enjoying the beautiful white winter this year and we are continuing the theme of winter in the class.
February Topics
We will also be looking at the winter Olympic sports and children will be encouraged to watch some of the Olympics to familiarize themselves with different winter sports that may be new to them. While they may be familiar with ice skating or ice hockey, they will learn the names of such sport as luge, curling or speed skating. This is one time our older children especially would be encouraged to look at these sport on TV if they have the opportunity. There will also be a discussion of different nationalities coming together for such an event and what true sportsmanship is all about.

Chinese New Year
This month is also the Year of the Dog on the Chinese Calendar and the celebration of Chinese New Year. We will once again celebrate this cultural event in the class. You will be notified which day we will celebrate in the class where children have the option to dress in red as they discover what this color means to the celebration. We will also taste some Chinese finger foods, always a favorite of children.
Father's Day, February 22nd, 9 - 10.30 am
This is also the month when we celebrate with our Fathers and they will once again be invited to join us for a breakfast from 9 - 10:30 am. This is a morning for fathers to enjoy some time with their children in the class so be sure to clear your schedule for at least an hr as it means so much for children to share this special time with their dads! Once again we will notify our fathers closer to the day of celebration around February 22. For Fathers who might have a scheduling conflict, please be sure to send a male representative in your place, be it a grandfather, uncle etc. as we would want to avoid a child not having someone to celebrate this special day.
A Few Reminders
Late Arrivals
Finally, we remind parents to be on time each day and that children will not be allowed in the class after 9:30 am. The Montessori work period is a 3 hr uninterrupted time (9-12 am) and anytime a child is late, it disrupts the class as well as affect the late child whose morning is disrupted and they may miss some important group activity or take a longer time to get their day started.
Flower supplies
Please be reminded that many parents have missed their turn to supply a bouquet of flowers to the class for the children's flower arranging activities. Please check the bulletin board when it is your turn to bring flowers. Please supply a variety and colorful flowers and avoid white flowers as these do not attract the children to do this work.
Spare Clothing
The assistants will be going through the children's extra clothes cubbies and notify parents to ensure they have 2 sets of clothes at all times. If soiled clothes are sent home, please make sure to send a new set back so they will always have clothes at school for those change of clothes days! PLEASE WRITE YOUR CHILD's name inside ALL their clothes as there are many children with the same mitts, boots, hats etc.

It is impossible for assistants to keep track of each child's clothes and it helps when their name is written on their clothing items.

Especially now that we are having lots of snow, we are having a lot more wet clothes after play time outside. We will place a lost and found box outside the class so check from time to time of you have lost an clothing item. For those children who stay in the afternoon, please send a tube of extra toothpaste to keep in their cubbies to avoid running out.
We look forward to another great month ahead!
